Where I come from y'all is 100% normal and if you say you guys or, heaven forbid, yous guys like a Yankee you will be laughed at. We have one lady from New York that works here and we actually hafta translate sometimes for her. We were giving out popsicles to the customers the other week and when she asked them if they wanted an ice pop they didn't know what she was talking about. Between her and the other corworker that is from South Africa calling them ice lollies our poor customers were so confused. I had to keep going behind them and telling the customers what they meant lol
I live in South Georgia now so y'all is normal. You guys isn't too badly laughed at. Having moved from place to place, I have a hard time understanding why people make fun of people for speaking a different dialect. Still I try to remind myself (and other people) that you is plural so you don't really need to say you guys or y'all or youins or anything like that, just "you" is fine.
