As long as the thread is being necro'd anyway, I'd like to clarify this. Communism was secular in the sense that it wasn't based on religion or spirituality (though many of its early leaders had cults of personality), but it wasn't politically secular, which would have been, as a policy, government neutrality towards religion, neither promoting nor oppressing it.
The Soviets moved in that direction when they revised their constitution, but the communist League of Militant Atheists really deserved the adjective 'militant', as they were granted authority by the Central Committee to give anti-religious dictates to the military, schools and universities, and more. They can be credited with the destruction of thousands of historical religious buildings. At the height of their power, they were instrumental (lot of overlap in their membership and COMPOL) in a decision to purge priests and committed supporters of the church.
Fortunately, the government moderated on religion and the League was disbanded.
