I'll catch a few quips if I tell people not to use redneck as an insult too. Yes, insensitive people exist (and always have, they aren't a product of the anti-sjw clique..or the internet). For that reason, if no other reason, toughen up. If we want to advocate for minority viewpoints or experiences we can't collapse like a flan in a cupboard every time someone says something insensitive. The entire point of advocacy is to confront those insensitive things, and if you can't face the opposition you're patently unequipped to deal with that, or them.
I hear things like that, in my own life. People express surprise, now that we have the internet. "Where did all these racists come from? I just can't listen to their shit". They didn't come from anywhere, they've always been here. Some of us have heard their shit our whole lives.
