I don't think it had anything to do with their reputation because it happened before they were on the show, so they weren't public figures at the time.
They didn't report it to the police until it happened the second time because they didn't want to call the cops on their own son and thought they could fix/prevent the problem on their own.
I admit I don't know much about this, only what I just read on a wiki page, so apologies in advance.
But it seems to me like multiple daughters being molested takes precedence over one son doing it to them. That's no excuse to not call the cops the first time around. And even as they didn't call the cops, they certainly could've been far more stringent in their efforts to correct his behaviour than they were.
Also, apologies to anyone for whom this may be a sensitive topic. I've never experienced this kind of abuse myself, so I don't know what is OK to say in these kinds of conversations and what is not.
