As far as I'm concerned, Bernie Sanders was the "3rd party candidate" in this election cycle. I wonder what happened to him...
When US presidential candidates have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars and a year and half of campaigning to be considered a serious contender, I don't think there's much of a chance of any 3rd party candidate having a shot at the presidency. The American public likes familiar candidates who speak in quick and easy sound bites that are easily digested on social media. I don't see that changing any time soon.
Anyway, the robots will take over in the next century or so, rendering the idea of a 3rd party candidate obsolete.
