To urge people to come out without fear so we can learn about them, try to understand where the flaw is in the way their brains work, and figure out a real solution. Teaching kids how to be safe isn't a solution to pedophilia. It's a protection against child molestation. It's important and we should keep doing it but it's nothing to do with actually addressing pedophilia which I think really could be addressed if we put some effort into trying.
This is exactly what needs to be done. As understandable as the way pedophiles are treated today is, it doesn't really solve the problem any more than making homosexuality illegal made gay people go away. All it does is thin out the numbers and doesn't actually get to the root of this problem. If we get people to be more open about the problem (and sure as shit not condoning it in any way, unless perhaps they had the good sense to not act on those desires), we might get people trying to study it, and, if at all possible, find a way to either neutralise or perhaps even get rid of the desire altogether. Of course, there will always be pedophiles who wouldn't comply. Would these be the majority of the pedophilic whole or just a minority, and if so, how small? The fact is, I have no fucking idea and, until we can get some research off the ground to really establish it, we never will. And no matter how many predators Chris Hansen may have caught (most of which got off scot-free due to the dodgy legality of the circumstances behind their arrest), it won't make any difference in the long run.
