Theists think that they should try to follow in to the footsteps of Christian martyrs, who not only abandoned pleasure, but embraced hard work in the name of "higher goals"(common goodness).
From what I have seen, their train of thoughts is intuitive "If such perfect standards exist, where only compassion is expected from people, then surly its not made by egoistical humans".
