Key isn't as bad as all that, honestly. He's conservative, but a comparatively mild and enlightened one. He kinda-sorta personally supports gay marriage (now that a majority of the electorate do), attends church purely as a social convention, while he has publically disavowed belief in an after life, isn't entirely hostile to some form of a welfare state, and is at best lukewarm on privatisation of government services.
