God didn't strike him down with lightning but it sounds like religion is only real to you when it suits you best?
A freethinker isn't necessarily an atheist, it's just someone who uses science, reason and logic to determine conclusions. Unfourtunately people will often come to different conclusions all the time. What he supposedly said to you after you told him such though is probably just the kind of response you can expect from a bible bashing nut head. They often have their favourite lines out of the bible, which they often don't understand themselves.
Many people like this follow blindly, and it's rather ironic how christians would probably call you a sheep which has strayed from the flock... as opposed to being a sheep which blindly follows what their preacher says.
These sort of people are morons, and I consider it best to just let them think whatever the fuck they want. You can only have a reasonable conversation with someone who wants to be reasonable. It's better not to even let them get started with you, because even when you present them with clear contradictions with the verses they spout, or point out that they simply are irrelevant or untrue, they will just cling on to them and completely ignore what you have to say.
Until these sorts of people are truly 'open' to what you have to say it's best to just leave them the hell alone
