I concede that from a macroscopic perspective the economy may have statistically improved. The general experience of most people I know is that they still have not fully recovered from 2008. My vendors are scrambling for work and the credit reports I see for prospective renters show stagnant incomes for the recent years. Many people describe our current situation as the "new normal". That meme didn't appear out of nowhere. It seems to me that the only way you can consider the last 8 years an improvement is to lower expectations for the middle-class.
