What is it with Trump supporters not wanting to discuss policy without name calling

That's a false dichotomy. Another, alternative instance: That someone, or some group, may support a candidate not on the basis that they think the candidate is great, but rather on the basis that they hate the competing candidate more.

Also, an interesting tidbit for you: the suffragetes - that is; first-wave feminism - had the support of the KKK.

And the hate the competing candidate doesn't fly either. There's an N word at the end of his second term. One would think they'd have fallen over themselves in endorsing McCain or Romney. But for some reason they didn't.

And by the way, take it from the horse's mouth. That's what David Duke said.

I've noticed a similarity between the far-left and the far-right that applies to this thread.

Both like to make a LOT of noise, but neither of them are especially good at listening to other people.  Actual empathy, actually understanding other people's positions, it's so damn rare it's like a fucking super power.
