Animals that are just plain dumb
#20
RE: Animals that are just plain dumb
The American Coot is an unusually stupid creature. When I was a kid and went hunting, the dumb bastards would just swim up to us, practically begging to be shot at point-blank range. I'm sorry to say that I indulged a few of them, which was stupid and cruel on my part since they aren't worth a damn as a food bird.

Now I can't stomach the thought of shooting any animal with the possible exception of humans.

Possums are fairly stupid, too. I stepped outside one night and found one a few feet from my front door. Of course, it played dead. I just stood there, railing at it: "I can see you! I'm fucking standing right here. You're not fooling anyone!" This went on for several minutes. One idiot played dead, and the other idiot kept talking to it like it understood a single word. In the end, we parted ways -- each returning to his peculiar niche of stupidity.
