The question in the thread title asks why atheists don't think it's real. Not believing in the Author of Sin is probably a good reason for not accepting Original Sin.
You'll note that nowhere did I say, or imply, that OS makes sense, contrary to what you write here. I just wanted to make sure that my personal stance on it is clear: the idea that damnation is heritable is stupid considering that the god putting it into place is said to be perfectly just.
