I can only repeat what I always say. Take him at his word. He will do what he said to do. Reintroducing torture - even if it doesn't work, in his own words. Killing the families of terrorists - or suspected terrorists - may come next.
Take him at his word, and you won't be surprised by the depravity. I know I'm always arguing against comparing him to Hitler, but what you said there begs a comparison. There was a standard phrase in Hitler's Germany: If only the Führer knew. Well, he knew, and Trump knows. He's not a puppet, since he's not Shrub. Shrub was a simpleton, easily manipulated, this one is a strong willed primitive.
Oh, I have no doubt that Trump means exactly what he says. I encountered people here and there during the campaign who thought he must have been joking or performing when he said his outrageous things but I always told them that he's not joking, he's 100% serious. Which is why Republicans who want to roll the clock back on everything have been wetting themselves with joy since he was "elected".
