National Service

That's not a difference.  We award contracts to private business for our infrastructure programs.  A national service could...depending on it's size, reduce or eliminate that necessity.

My mistake then, I was under the impression that you guys did most of that stuff 'in house'. But going back to the previous point, as, in most cases non-citizens aren't permitted to work for the civil service, the question of a non-citizen earning citizenship through it is a moot point. It's an interesting idea, but unlikely, we don't have a great track record on either refugees or being quick to give citizenship to people who really should get it (see Ghurkas).

Germany had this type of mandatory service for men until a few years ago. Either Military or social type work. It worked great, and the young "civil servants" were an important corner stone of social sevices and care for the elderly. I myself got a 3 month medical education and worked as a paramedic assistant/ambulance driver during my service.

Why did they get rid of it?
