I for one would fight teeth and claw against some politicians instrumentalising the demise of one of my loved ones. Regardless if I like what the politicians stands for or if I don't. It's so obvious this isn't to reach out, but to change some political dime over the memory of a dead person. If she doesn't see that, fine. If she's comfortable with that, also fine. But never think this to be an altruistic move by someone who cares.
