As my old Economics prof said, the stock market is not "investing" it is "speculation." Trading one asset for another in the hopes that one will go up and the other down. Investment in an economic sense requires expanding the productive capabilities of an actual business.
It's gambling plain and simple. You're betting on the chances of a CEO authorising stuff which will rise the profitability figures of his company in the short term, even though this kind of thinking is detrimental to the companies real prospects in the long term.
