I think it's very plausible that Pence is clueless about this. He doesn't come from Trump's inner circle, there's no close friendships between him and transition staff, and VPs historically are locked out of the information/decision-making processes.

I would rather Trump stay in office. It makes 2018 that much more problematic for the Republicans, and that in turn may mean the difference between Trump getting one SCOTUS nomination or getting three.
