Now that they established their new story/universe I think they're going to be much more ambitious. Luke's line in this trailer about the Jedi needing to end makes me believe that.

"Fandango caught up with Daisy Ridley briefly after the Last Jedi panel at Star Wars Celebration, and he asked whether she’s spoken with anybody who has seen a rough cut of the movie yet. She responded:
'I’ve spoken to a number of people that have seen a rough cut [of The Last Jedi], and everyone’s like ‘It’s different, it’s different.’ With Rian’s vision and his image – and also I think he [J.J.] brought the old fans back and the new fans in, and he had all this stuff – Rian had more room to kind of do his thing.'
While some fans might be worried that hearing people say “it’s different” means it doesn’t feel like a Star Wars movie, Daisy makes it sounds like the feeling is merely a departure from the more nostalgic approach that J.J. Abrams took with The Force Awakens. With a creative filmmaker like Rian Johnson on board, that’s exactly what most fans are hoping for, I think."
