His parents were refugees, as your own link mentions. The idea was that refugees and other immigrants would come to the West, see that secular society was better, and adopt our ways. With some groups that happens. With some Muslims, we're now seeing that it doesn't.
People lock their doors at night to keep danger out, even though it also keeps out someone who might be harmless and just looking for a place to sleep. Why is it radical or evil to apply the same principal at the national level?

Again, you need to look past such statistics and think for yourself. Maybe these people don't meet the technical definition of refugee, but no one's saying that we should only be looking at refugees either, so it's not much of a point.
