Honestly, I don't even consider the sort of people who would have such a knee-jerk reaction at a joke like this to actually be progressive. I hate to play the "No True Scotsman" card, but given that he used it to draw a parallel between the modern day senator and slavery (a joke which admittedly did not land very well), using a pejorative term for black people on HIMSELF, it's honestly become obvious that the people who treat any use of the word like it's a racist rant are not really progressive. They're just as reactionary as the right-wingers they consider their enemies. It's just that the sort of people they empathise with are more in line with the political Left than the Right.
