The key difference was that, back then, we didn't have one of the two major political parties pandering to extremists. Sure, the Southern Democrats were still totally hung up on keeping the blackman down, but at least the rest of the Democrats were a bit more open-minded. Do you see a split in the Republican party like that? We just have the not-quite-far-right-wing, the far-right-wing, and the Nazi-in-all-but name.
