But how do I get out to the edge of the universe to verify the bars are there?  What happens if I slip and fall off the edge when I get there

What happens if I keep cranking that zoom knob and the bars eventually comes back to hit in the back?

If you keep cranking, you'll wind up in the black hole where the universe began, in which case you're on your own.
