And it has not served us well.

This is one of the failings of American military leadership: the habit of snapping a salute to the President with a brisk "Yes, sir" without sitting him down and explaining this matter -- and others that KvC brings up as well. The guy had a lot of insight into the military's input upon statecraft, but our general officers seem locked into focusing on the operational level at the expense of the strategic -- or at least too afraid to talk back to whomever is in the Oval Office contemplating which tail should wag the dog this year.
