The talking snake was just a metaphor for the darker side of our human nature..

If it's a metaphor for anything, I think it's more likely a metaphor for one of the following:

• The goddess-worship that was displaced by the rise of the Yahwist cult and/or
  
• An initiatory coming-of-age experience when one's childhood gives way to adult knowledge and aresponsibility.
  

1- Speaking of goddesses, a witch in a chatroom once said she was invoking the Egyptian goddess Sekhmet to come and get me; I put the kettle on but she never turned up (sniffle)
Hey guys don't you just hate getting stood up by goddesses?
Mind you, after seeing her pic (below) I wouldn't have known whether to tickle her chin or offer her a saucer of milk..



2- yes I've had a soft spot for pagans after seeing them burn Nic Cage in a wicker man, he thoroughly deserved it for squashing that wasp on the pub bar.
And I remember the great scene in the original Wicker Man where Britt Ekland initiates a shy inexperienced young man into adulthood by shagging him silly, she can initiate me any time she likes..
