The military by and large is currently an reliably enslaved constituency of the republicans, like the original Mamelukes of Egypt.   The masters could hardly perceive any real need to respect such slaves.  Any respect they care to show would be purely ceremonial, intended to be seen by others, not to be felt by its nominal recipients.  Eventually the military caste of this country could supplant the pashas and eunuchs of the right wing, just like the Mamelukes would eventually become the de facto rulers of Egypt while continuing to profess to be slaves to a now powerless sultan.  But the fruition of that development may yet be decades if not a century or two in the future for the US.
