Right. Because threatening our neighbors to the south is always a good idea.
Quote:Simply break diplomatic relations with Mexico and forbid all exports, imports, and travel between the countries. We will lose a lot of food (Tequila, Twinkies and fruit) and manufactured imports (cars and air conditioners). The airlines and cruise ship operators will lose business. And we could forcibly expel all Mexican citizens. But we had such a system in place against Cuba for decades.
The size and population of Cuba are extremely different when compared to Mexico. Furthermore - Cuba had (still has?) a dictatorship. Mexico has a President and a democratic government in place. When you look at other factors with my we cut off contact with Cuba - it's like you are trying to compare apples and oranges. Mexico is nothing like Cuba. Did you not learn a thing in school?
Quote:The easiest way to get Mexico to pay for the wall is to simply stop giving them tens of $millions in foreign aid each year until the wall is paid off.
That's not how that works.
Quote:You can always do anything you want to if you have the guts to do it and are willing to pay the price.
These ideas are terrible. Why would the US want to ruin any amicable ties we have with our neighbor? This is pure ignorance to the problem and it invites even more problems than we had before.
It's not like Wyrd makes much of a distinction between Cuba and Mexico. It seems to him a Cuban is a Puerto Rican is a Mexican. To racists, brown people are brown people and any other distinction once you've eliminated the possibility they're Muslims, any distinctions after that are meaningless.
Also, his plan hinges on the possibility that Mexico is willing to fork over about 6-7% of their GDP to pay for the wall, which is not only unpopular on both sides of the border (note: one vote for it had not a single Representative from a border constituency voting for it), but is also absurdly impractical, since it requires about 1933 miles of a concrete fence that has to go six feet into the ground, through the desert, but also mountains, several homes and even a college campus. And all this involves antagonising a country that has (at least by the admittedly low standards of Latin American-US relations) a good relationship with America, and all for what? Even if illegal immigration is a problem that requires a drastic measure, such a solution has to be, as Frank Zappa once said before Congress: "the equivalent of treating dandruff by decapitation."
Can you imagine Canada strong-arming America into giving up over a trillion dollars over something they don't like? Can you imagine us giving it up? No? Well, there's your answer.
Also, the US paid Mexico $420 million in Economic and Military assistance in 2013. This is less than a percent of the most reliable estimates of what the wall would cost. This is not even close to a fair trade.
