Lots of Southerners migrated North looking for work that didn't involve contemplating a mule's anus. Some of them took their prejudices with them and happily shared with like-minded cretins.

In fact there are still a fair amount of southerns coming to my one horse town and vice-versa. We have some people trying to act southern even though they seem to have no roots there. My town (technically a city) isn't even in the southern half of Ohio.

Well you know... people say anything south of the Mason-Dixon line is a southern state. I grew up in Maryland. There are no southern accented people indigenous to there. No southern fried foods indigenous to the area. People don't have buggies in Maryland. They have shopping carts. And they have grocery bags instead of sacks. In fact, Maryland is drenched in Northern culture. Can't really say I believe that it's actually a southern state. 

Maybe it was at one point, but somewhere along the way, the southern "roots" moved farther south.
