Sure is. That's where I cribbed my damnatio memoriae suggestion from. Our monument to Benedict Arnold, aptly called "Boot Monument" is a statue of a leg (the one that Arnold lost the use of). It does not refer to him by name. We very literally hung a medal on his leg, and hung the rest of him for a traitor.
Quote:Ok, you understand that these are statues of people who tried to overthrow the US for the right to keep human chattels, correct? They are venerating statues of people who belonged to a foreign power that went to war against the US. How many statues of Nazi leaders are in Ohio? Is there a shrine to Tojo? Do you have a Mussolini Memorial Library? It was a civil war. The contention is that they are honoring americans and american forces. OFC, there are plenty of non-specific monuments to the american infantryman, for example. There are even monuments, specifically, to all americans who died in the civil war. Those monuments are brutal in their accuracy in ways that confederate statue pron was never even intended to be. These monuments don't explicitly carry water for white supremacy, and obviously, as Boot Monument and the Burnt District Monument shows us...we're capable of expressing the admiration we might feel for a persons battlefield character in spite of their treasonous ends, and the loss suffered by civilians as collateral damage......without licking the KKK's hole in the process.

If one finds themselves fellating the instruments of control in segregated america as a means of honoring their history...... excuse me, feeling a deep and compelling sense of confederate statue enthusiasm.....then it's not because one has to, but because one wants to.
(there are plenty of statues to nazis in ohio, btw, just not the german kind.
