Facing Mortality, By Brian37 (AKA Brian James Rational Poet on FB and @Brianrrs37 on twitter.)
You didn't give up
Your body gave out
As thus old age
Will everyone
I was horrified
In the examination room
When they gave you the news
The infection was back
It took everything in me
To not scream
How unfair it was
For it to happen to you
You could have gone
Back up to Duke
To try get rid of it
But you refused
Years of fighting
All sorts of things
Stroke, cancer
Aneurysms too
But you knew
After they told you
No guarantees
After what you'd been through
You were not calling it quits
No, not one bit
Just accepting
The ride had to end
I was devistated
Witnessing your decision
But I understood
After all I had witnessed
I screamed in my head
"NOT NOW, NOT EVER!"
But I knew nothing could
Delay the inevitable
And now here it is
My first Novermber
Without you
Gone forever
I''ll miss
Our Thanksgiving dinner
The one I order
From the deli each year
Heating up the corn
And potatos
Turkey and football game
Who will win, who knows?
I don't care
If the Skins will loose
I don't have you this year
I'd rather have you.
You didn't give up
Your body gave out
As thus old age
