My good news:
You know how sometimes over the years, you acquire things that you absolutely hate, but you keep round all the same? Three years ago, a very dear friend of ours gave us a lead crystal vase as a Christmas gift. This vase is ugly. I mean, really, seriously, hideously ugly. If you look up 'ugly' in the dictionary, you'll find a wee picture of this vase. It possesses the sort of ugliness that makes decorators weep and gives little children nightmares. But, as I said, the fella who gave it us is a dear friend, and he'd be hurt if we told him how much we hate this thing, so we keep it in the parlour on a little wall sconce.
Not long ago, I was tidying, when I bumped into the sconce and the vase fell off. Things went slo-mo, and I had a flash of Mikey asking about the vase the next time he was at the house. I remember thinking, as the vase drifted towards the floor, 'ohjesusohjesusohjesus'. It hit the edge of a metal-framed end table and shattered into a skajillion pieces.
So prayer works after all.
