I also read an article in The Guardian back in October about Las Vegas shooting victims being viciously harassed by conspiracy theorists while they are trying to recover from being shot at by a madman.
The article is rather long but a good read.

Apparently there is a whole slimy subculture of animals who have convinced themselves that none of these massacres actually occurred, the victims and survivors of each of the massacres are "crisis actors" and these are all fake stories concocted by liberals with the end goal of separating people from their guns.
With the number of people who not only believe these conspiracy theories but are also willing to act on their faulty beliefs, we are well and truly fucked as a nation.

Unbelievable. I was watching a program about Russian propaganda a few months ago and they were saying that rather than deny a story it's best to simply add other elements to it. For instance when the flight got shot down over the Ukraine, rather than deny something that clearly happened what you do is pop alternative theories into it like say there was a NATO jet in the area, or that the missile looked like it came from another's territory etc.
So add alternative stories rather than deal with the real issue at hand, in that way you put so much crap out there that people simply do not know what to believe. This is why a trustworthy, free press is so vital.
