Islam pulled itself together sometime in the 7th century. They have had 1300 years also. They really are not that far behind and they have the advantage of modern weapons which the sackers of Magdeburg did not.
No argument here, the modern Muslims in the ME have the capability to make the 30 Years' War look like a walk in the park ... and the tribal culture to chase it down to the last bullet. I mean, look at what's going on in Yemen right now.
