The trouble isn't really the probability of extraterrestrial life, or advanced extraterrestrial life. The trouble is that there's no reason or evidence to suggest that "alien transmission" is even a safe -assumption- for the origin of that signal... regardless of whether there's extraterrestrial life, or advanced extraterrestrial life.
The one does not rationally inform the other, or have an effect on probability setting.
You know, for example, that there are people living in the house next to you. That doesn't lead you to posit that everything flying over your roof that you can't explain comes out of their window. Feel me? Assume that the probability of aliens or nextdoor neighbors is unity - that they exist. What does that have to do with the stuff that careens over your house?
The parallel to ufo stories above was entirely unintentional, btw..but I think equally instructive.
