Smallpox, among other diseases, decimated them. There were maybe 600 spaniards, from a small fleet. I don't care if they had fucking tanks: they had no supplies that they didn't carry with them, and were across a sea from reinforcement. Arrows are as deadly as cannons, what changes is the scope... and there were tens of thousands of natives.

Disease won the 'new world'. Singularly. Other bits were cream on the top (the other nations taking advantage of the situation to strike at the greatest nation around that was always warring with them... the noted technological superiority (body armor moreso than those others)... montezuma's religious idiocy)... but make no mistake: disease won it.
