Ahhh ... "conform or be cast out."

Aside from the idea that they're teaching kids that even their own body is not their own to run as they see fit, they're also teaching kids that obedience is paramount.

Learning how to deal with rejection is part of growing up.

Those are poor values too teach children indeed .

 I suspect obedience being paramount is a big part of why it ended up happening.

But still, not learning how to deal with rejection... in the immortal words of Spanky Ham, nothing can possibly go wrong!
