Guns are far more dangerous to the people in a residence than they are to any hypothetical intruder. The intruder would be in a house for, generously, an hour in his entire life. The residents live with the guns. This is why 34 innocent people die for every bad guy that gets shoot down. Guns are either ready for immediate use, and therefore not safe, or they're safe, and therefore not ready for immediate use. The FBI tells us that the most dangerous intruders are the ones who come when they KNOW people will be home. They are looking for a confrontation. They're ready, they initiate the event, not the resident.
