'm thinking more along the lines of climate change causes severe food shortages, and people start killing each other over necessities.  Or something happens to the electrical grid, and we return to the 1800's, except none of us have any survival skills.  Nuclear war decimating the world and things devolving into some sort of warlord/militia scenario ruling over small areas.  It's all a house of cards.  

Again, I don't think it's so likely that I'm running out to get a bunch of guns.  But I recognize that I'm sticking my head in the sand a bit by not being prepared.

I've always been puzzled by this post-apocalyptic scenario...
So, you're in a state of scarcity of everything and gas, so you... make your vehicle heavier and add a guzzling engine so you can join other people with ridiculously gas hungry vehicles in their hunt for the few lone survivors who still have a few drops of gas?
The end total cannot be positive!

Of course, if those ideas were created today, I think electric cars would be the main transportation means and photovoltaics would be the predominant energy generators.
Oh, wait... someone made that movie just a couple years ago.... oh....
