Using the word punishment loosely. There are plenty of times when I feel like I'm punishing myself in the short term at the gym. And it can be based on lots of different types of interaction and feelings. It's also mixed with depriving myself of food I like the taste of that's going to make me fatter.
If I'm angry that can give me adrenaline as energy. The same if I'm scared. If I'm horny I can be motivated to use energy and try and look good.
I'd never just deprive myself of food or cut myself or anything like that though. I'd at least want the potential of the short term punishment being useful to me in the long term.

It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
