I know in my case, it's mostly my fault, the onset and prolonging of it.
It's true that there is such a thing as situational depression, and people under prolonged stress can suffer breakdowns (and I've experienced these), but in many cases the primary etiology is the brain chemistry. This is not something that can be driven away with willpower. You can control your environment and your behaviours somewhat to make them mentally healthier, but medication may be required if the cause is a malfunction in neurotransmitters.
