I have hosted a couple of open mic nights... but here you only get free drinks all night for doing so. So, you have to drink lots to make it worth it.

Fuck that! You need to get the local musicians on board. We all kind of have an unofficial union of sorts to keep people from driving the prices down. Some assbag goes in and plays all night for 50 bucks and drinks - that wrecks it for all of us. Plus, you usually get what you pay for. Shitty players don't charge much at all because the know they can't - and eventually, they won't be getting any call backs from the local pubs because their patrons complain about the shitty entertainment.
