There has been a shit load of angst and vitriol here recently, it's gotten to the point where a lot of the people of contrary opinion who make this place more interesting are being deterred. This is primarily (and works best as) a discussion forum, as of late it's turning into less of a place for debate and discussion and more of a place where we sit around mocking people with contrary opinions, calling names, flaming and the like.
Something has to change, otherwise this place is going to be nothing but a conglomerate of similar minds with no diversity or discussion, just an angry mob who chases off the theists with burning torches and pitchforks.
For now I would appreciate if the members here try and be more empathetic and courteous to people who are new, either to the forum or atheism in general. For the time-being we will see if an appeal to the sensibilities of the members and launching new initiatives such as the blog and trying to restart some formal debates and other activities will change things, if the persisting decline in civility continues we might have to look to other solutions.
