It's not the fairy tale itself; it's the fact that believers are deliberately conveying a message intended to cause fear in the recipient. It's no different than phoning me up and telling me to give you $10,000 in cash so that I won't get my kneecaps broken.
To put this in perspective, how would you like it if a follower of Zeus told you that he had prayed to his god to burn your house down with a lightning strike? You may not believe in Zeus, but the person wishing you harm is real.
