"Fake News" has been a thing for as long as I can remember. Clear back to the Kennedy Assassination in '63.

The Warren Commission muffed the sequence/timing of Oswald's shots (not fixed till Jim Moore's book in the 1990s) and led to all manner of consequences, none of them good.
 The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.
