What did this person say exactly? He may have been referring to personal culpability.
She said something along the lines of that everyone sins and because of this that though catholicism thinks engaging in the gay lifestyle is wrong, it's no different than any other sin, or something to that effect.

Atheists are capable of sinning and committing serious sins, just like everyone else.
Is it possible for their serious sin to become a mortal sin? (mortal sin = a serious sin with full consent of the will and knowledge that you are turning away from God)
....I suppose if a person doesn't think God is real but they commit an act that they know is a very wrong and horrible thing to do, and they choose to do so willingly anyway, they are choosing to turn away from goodness. In doing so, I suppose they are turning away from God in that sense.
