That can't be possible. What did english call the color before they were exposed to the fruit? Oranges didn't come to Europe until the 1500s and probably didn't even come to England at all then, and if they did were pretty rare. They definitely would have a word for the color then.
I guess that's right, it was named after the fruit. Theu just called it yellow red before they had the fruit.
