No, Atlas is right (I had to look it up, not being an authority on the subject) - women covering up regards only the body and the hair.  Some women voluntarily cover the face, but there is nothing in Islam requiring them to do so. Iran and (I think) Saudi Arabia require the veil, but that's a political position, not a religious one.

It's very rarely voluntary, but you're right islam has little to do with it.

The practise is tribal in a lot of areas where islam dominqtes, and comes from the idea that women are things to be owned (which historically was very common, it's only fairly recent that most christian denominations accepted married women having ideas different to their husbands).
