Surely all his work was done when he first created our environment? He knew what would happen from that point on, so did he make things so they'd deliberately go wrong, so he'd have to keep getting involved to patch things up?
Or is he altering the perfect plan to something less perfect on the whim of Christians?
PS: that brings up an interesting point. God knowing the future can be married with us having "free will" if you assume that God constantly intervenes so as to counteract our free will, funneling us into the pre-preprogrammed direction.
So, not really free will. But it feels like it, even though he has his hands on our balls the whole time.
