It's pretty crazy to think killing something innocent can wash away crimes. What about the crime of murder that you committed to wash away the other crimes? People don't like paying for their own crimes, so kill this sheep, or pray over a goat and send it into the wilderness, or whatever.
Though it doesn't help that there seems to be a "one punishment fits all" for every crime from looking at someone lustfully to genocide and enslavement.
