At some level leaders of a particular denomination, church, sect or schism realize they are not evincing due diligence in observing most Biblical prohibitions and so they rationalize they can be 'hyper' vigilant regarding a specific sin and maybe gaslight God a bit into thinking they are doing better than they really are.
The classic example for me being the Methodists holding tough on gambling while turning a blind eye to divorce/remarriage, linsey woolsie clothing, eschewing serpent handling and so very, very many others . . .
